چکیده
Abstract Knowing the age of individuals in a population is crucial to devise appropriate conservation strategies, especially on endangered long-lived species such as sea turtles. Sea turtles do not have external morphologic characters that indicate their age; therefore, has been estimated by indirect methods biometric measurements or skeletochronological analysis. Previous studies determined turtle can be with skeletal growth marks (GMs) produced annual seasonality. This study focused analysis known-age loggerheads reared under seminatural conditions, showing kept natural photoperiod and seawater temperature seasonality fed periodically, did present visible GMs. However, animals suffering health problems affecting exhibit suggests must taken caution at least early life stages for northeast Atlantic loggerhead population. Additionally, this showed strongly influences turtles’ rates.

Description of cloacoscopy in the loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta)
The aim of the study was to describe cloacoscopy in the loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) and to evaluate its efficacy in clinical practice. Cloacoscopy was performed on 31 turtles, 23 females and 8 males. Thirty minutes before anaesthesia, meloxicam (0.4 mg/kg) was administered intramuscularly. Turtles were anaesthetised with a combination of 0.04 mg/kg dexmedetomidine and 4 mg/kg ketamine a...
متن کاملNatal homing in juvenile loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta).
Juvenile loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta) from West Atlantic nesting beaches occupy oceanic (pelagic) habitats in the eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean, whereas larger juvenile turtles occupy shallow (neritic) habitats along the continental coastline of North America. Hence the switch from oceanic to neritic stage can involve a trans-oceanic migration. Several researchers have suggested th...
متن کاملVisual wavelength discrimination by the loggerhead turtle, Caretta caretta.
Marine turtles are visual animals, yet we know remarkably little about how they use this sensory capacity. In this study, our purpose was to determine whether loggerhead turtles could discriminate between objects on the basis of color. We used light-adapted hatchlings to determine the minimum intensity of blue (450 nm), green (500 nm), and yellow (580 nm) visual stimuli that evoked a positive p...
متن کاملBiochemical Indices and Life Traits of Loggerhead Turtles (Caretta caretta) from Cape Verde Islands
The loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) is an endangered marine reptile for whom assessing population health requires knowledge of demographic parameters such as individual growth rate. In Cape Verde, as within several populations, adult female loggerhead sea turtles show a size-related behavioral and trophic dichotomy. While smaller females are associated with oceanic habitats, larger females ...
متن کاملOvarian Dynamics in Free-Ranging Loggerhead Sea Turtles (Caretta caretta)
Vitellogenin (VTG) is an egg yolk-precursor protein that serves as a nutrient source for developing embryos in oviparous vertebrates. The hormonal control of this protein has been studied in a variety of taxa, but details about the dynamics of this protein remain to be elucidated in sea turtle species. To investigate the dynamics of VTG in a multi-clutch species under natural conditions, 38 adu...
